  1. South Texas says,

All roads, 2 lane and 4 lane can be posted at 75 in Texas. All of West Texas and South Texas near the Mexican border, nearly every 2 lane road is 70 or 75. All Interstates are 75 and 80 (80 in west Texas). The Austin to San Antonio toll road is 80 and 85. Supposedly more highways are to be raised to 85 once engineering studies are complete. All roads in 50 mile radius around Houston and Dallas have been lowered to 65 by the federal government for the “clean air act”. Nobody respects those lower speed limits. These speeds sound high but modern cars and trucks can safely operate at those speeds. Our travel distances are much greater than most states and driving slow causes more accidents due to people falling asleep. I used to commute from Laredo to Midland every week. Going 75/80 most of the way (verses 55/65) can cut 90
Minutes off the travel time. Falling asleep while driving in West Texas is a major cause of accidents. These higher limits are saving lives.

  2. Bill Kramer says,

We just finished a 2,400 mile road trip in 8 states. I found the states that have same speed limit for trucks and cars were much easier to drive in. The states where the trucks speed limit is 15mpg less than the cars meant constant lane changing, high anxiety, and a poor flow. Clearly it’s safer if all the traffic is moving a common speed.

We found best drivers were in South Carolina, worst were in Virgina and Michigan.

Michigan seemed to have the worst roads, many potholes to dodge.

Thank you john mohan for that “head spinning 75mile per hr’ comment . How ridiculous! I was hoping someone else caught that – I’ve always wanted to drive in Germany – now even more so – thanks

  4. Stan Tyburski says,

AZ is 75mph on the intestate, out side of a Metropolis. I believe that holds true for four lane State highways, but I am not positive about that one. I just recently moved here and have not been every where, yet. THANK YOU FOR THAT LOGIC with the interstates at least!

  5. Guy Daelemans says,

While high speeds may be dangerous, Drivers bopping along at 5 to 10 miles below the posted speed limit are more dangerous, and cause more accidents then speeders. Why? Because generally theu are holding other traffic back, and drivers tyry to get around them. I my opinion drivers that do not drive the speed limit should refrain from driving in passing or driving lanes. It would therefor be more realistic if minimum speed limits were posted for those lanes. People not feeling safe at higher speeds should remain in the righ or entering lane.

  6. Chuckie Walter says,

Highest speed on Florida highways is 70 MPH so at that speed , the average speed is 75MPH, I’m just saying!

    • Guy Daelemans says,

But is there a minimum speed posted? As a 60 year driver, I have come across drivers bopping along at 60 MPH on interstate 95 south of Orlando, and other drivers have to pass them any way they can, both on the right and left. So who is now causing the danger on the road?

  7. gary says,

70 MPH throughout Washington, cities have a 60 MPH limit. May go up to 75 MPH on I-90 in Eastern Washington.

  8. George Garnett says,

I use to live in Fort Lauderdale where the speed limit is 75 mph on I-75. When I moved out west a couple of years ago I noticed Texas has an 80 mph speed limit on I-10.
