The moment you’ve been waiting for (and saving up for) is finally here. It’s time to book your vacation! People often spend a good portion of the money set aside for their vacation on frivolous things. By following a few simple spending tips, you can keep more cash in your pocket while still enjoying your vacation to the fullest.
1. Book Early
Reserving flights and hotels several months in advance could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, depending on the circumstances. Alternatively, you might find good deals when booking at the very last minute as companies try to fill empty seats or rooms, but it’s not always a guarantee.
2. Stay Nearby
If you’re going to be visiting a big city, play it smart and reserve accommodations on the outskirts of the city. Rates in general tend to be much higher where the action is. 3. Pack Light
If you’re traveling by plane, pack smart and pack light. Avoid the additional fees that come with checking oversized and overweight luggage. Lugging around as little as possible will not only be good for your wallet, but your body and mood as well.
4. Remember Your Student/Military ID
A large number of attractions offer discounts on admission for students and members of the Military. Though not always advertised, they could save you a pretty penny, so be sure to ask.
5. Plan Your Meals
When you make hotel arrangements, try and book a place that has a refrigerator in the room (or request one) and do a quick grocery run when you arrive. Keeping your room stocked with food could save you a lot, as opposed to eating out every few hours.
6. Use Public Transportation
When you arrive, get around via bus instead of by taxi or shuttle. Not only is it cheaper, but being slower paced, it’s a good way to see more of the surrounding areas between points of interest. And walk when you can. It’ll be easier to stop and smell the roses.
7. Shop Wisely
Browsing gift shops and souvenir stands may seem like a great way to pass the time during layovers, but don’t feel as though you need to buy all of that memorabilia. If you end up deciding that you absolutely must get that mug for your boss, then maybe you can make an exception—just make sure it’s something that will really get put to good use.
A good vacation can do wonders for the mind, body and soul. But sometimes just getting around and eating while you’re there can end up costing you a lot more than you bargained for. If you play your cards right you can eliminate that burden and save a nice chunk of change instead—maybe even enough for another vacation!
